Biography: Raphaelle Peale, the first son of Charles Willson Peale, was born in Annapolis. Taught by his father, Raphaelle and Rembrandt Peale tried to establish a portrait gallery of distinguished persons in Baltimore. On their travels in the southern state, Raphaelle painted miniatures while Rembrandt painted oil portraits. Raphaelle Peale worked in Philadelphia and Norfolk until 1804; thereafter, he and his brother visited southern cities Savannah and Charleston, as well as Baltimore. After his health declined in 1815, he devoted himself to still-life painting which was his most successful artistic pursuit. He visited Maryland once more in 1820, and painted a few portraits here. He also executed profile portraits using a device known as a "physiognotrace."
Taught By: his father, Charles Willson Peale
