Biography: Known for his meticulous rendering of grapes as subject in his still-life paintings, Andrew John Henry Way's work was admired by art patron William T. Walters. A number of Way still-lifes of grapes remain a part of the Walters Art Museum permanent collection.

On the advice of Emanuel Leutze, noted German-American painter, Way pursued artmaking in the Dusseldorf style of still-life painting: with careful, scientific precision using lustrous color on dark, earth-colored backgrounds. Way handled light's reflective qualities on the grapes with dexterity. Way painted representations of many different kinds of grapes, from those grown in the western United States to those grown in France.

The grapes in the Walters Art Museum collection painted by Way are identified as the Prince Albert variety at the Walters' country home in St. Mary's where William Walters explored horticulture and animal husbandry.
