Biography: First listed in the Baltimore City directories in 1810, Cornelius de Beet was an immigrant born in Amsterdam. Scholar Elizabeth Johns writes that he brought with him from Europe "a late Baroque still-life tradition and a landscape style that united Dutch and Italian conventions." His painting Hollingsworth Mill, Jones Falls depicts a site near Baltimore showing the light effects of the late-afternoon sun.
