Biography: A 'genre' painter of everyday life, Sauerwein accompanied his succesful contemporary, Francis Blackwell Mayer, to Paris to study with Charles Gleyre, a noted painter of historical scenes and genre. Charles D. Sauerwein began his career in Baltimore in 1857 and 1858 with portraits and genre scenes.
