Biography: Born in Germany, Karl Metzler immigrated to the United States in 1916 after travel first to Holland, and was a longtime resident of Baltimore. Following his art education at the Maryland Institute College of Art, he began exhibiting in 1935. He had a lithograph reproduced in America Today, a book published by the American Artists' Congress in 1936. The print resides in The Baltimore Museum of Art. It also exhibited in traveling exhibitions throughout the country. Metzler had three one-man exhibits at the BMA, and two at the Friends of Art house. He had a one-man show at the New School for Social Research in New York City.
Karl Metzler rented a studio on St. Paul St. and was an active member of the Charcoal Club, the Artists' Union and Sculptors' Guild of Baltimore. In addition, he was a member of the Regional Committee of selection for the World's Fair, where his work was also shown. He did paintings for federal and local art projects, some of which hang in public buildings.
He later ran a gallery and an art school out of his home in Baltimore.
