Biography: Born in Fredericksburg, Va., Shelby Shackelford studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art. The traditional approach to teaching art there left her discouraged, but a summer's study with the modernist painter Marguerite Zorach opened her eyes to new possibilities in the world of contemporary art. Traveling to Paris she worked in the studios of Othon Friesz and Fernand Léger, returning to paint in New York and Provincetown. Moving to Baltimore in 1943 with her husband Richard Cox, a physicist at The Johns Hopkins University, she taught art with the Red Cross at a Marine hospital. Shackelford was an active participant in Baltimore's art community, both as a teacher (she taught painting at The Baltimore Museum of Art) and as an independent artist.
