Biography: The member of a family firmly committed to sustaining Maryland's institutions and history, Francis, or Frank, Blackwell Mayer painted Maryland-history subjects, especially late in his life. His uncle helped to found The Maryland Historical Society, and, as a young man, the artist himself served as assistant librarian of the Society's Fine Arts Gallery. Frank Blackwell Mayer was important to Maryland's cultural history for his family's contributions and for his interest in documenting Maryland history through painting. Prior to his interest in painting this subject matter, he was accustomed to sketching architectural details and group scenes that lent him a facility in handling important historical scenes about Maryland that he concentrated on later in his life. Mayer bought a historic house in Annapolis, and completed a portrait of William Henry Rinehart that was acquired by William T. Walters.
