Biography: John Wesley Jarvis was a portrait painter born in England and brought to America as a child. He was the nephew of the founder of Methodism. John Wesley Jarvis was trained as an artist by engraver Edward Savage, and set up a portrait painting business with his contemporary Joseph Wood. At one point, Thomas Sully served as hired assistant to Jarvis. Henry Inman (1801-1846), who worked in Baltimore for a time, was apprenticed to Jarvis starting in 1814; Inman often painted backgrounds in Jarvis' works. Inman later trained Jarvis' son Charles in painting. Jarvis worked in Baltimore first in 1806 and then again at his studio on Water Street from 1811-13. Among John Wesley Jarvis' Baltimore sitters were the mother of art collector Robert Gilmor, and Fielding Lucas, a cultural leader in Baltimore. After he left Baltimore, he painted a series of portraits of leaders in the War of 1812, such as Thomas Paine, De Witt Clinton, Robert Morris and John Randolph. He traveled widely throughout the southern states, to Richmond and as far as New Orleans where he wintered.
