Biography: William Clarke was active in Baltimore as a portrait and miniature painter. His pictures, faithfully signed and often dated, indicate that he lived in Baltimore during the 1790s. In 1799, he placed an advertisement in the Philadelphia Federal Gazette newspaper, which might mean that he moved there after his residence in Baltimore.
