Biography: Joseph Wood was the son of a farmer from Clarkstown, N.Y. Joseph Wood left Clarkstown in 1794 for New York City with the intention of becoming a landscape artist. He instead became interested in miniatures, and entered into a partnership for a miniature-painting business with John WesleyJarvis in 1804 that lasted until 1807. From 1807-1813, he worked in Philadelphia on his own, and then moved to Washington. He painted in Baltimore 1819-20 and again in 1829.
