Biography: Hugh Newell, born in Ireland, studied art in Antwerp at the Academy, in Paris under Couture and in London at the Royal College of Art. Newell came to the United States in 1851 and settled in Baltimore, Maryland in 1853 at age 23, where he established himself successfully as a portrait painter. After about ten years, he left Baltimore just before the Civil War but returned 20 years later to serve as president of the Maryland Institute College of Art from 1979 to 1883. In the 20-year interim, he served as the principal of the Woman's School of Design in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After his return to Baltimore, he also served as Professor of Drawing at Johns Hopkins University.
