Signatures/Inscriptions/Labels: Signature, lower right: "S. Hamilton". On verso in black ink: "S. Hamilton, a sailor who had received no instruction in painting."; "The masts of the 'Cumberland' U.S. ship sunk by the Confederate iron-clad "Merrimac" on March 8th 1862 off Newport News
