War and Peace - Artists' Voices. Gallery 218 in Milwaukee WI, USA seeks entries for an unjuried, international, art exhibit entitled "War and Peace: Artists' Voices" to take place April 9-30, 2003. A reception with live entertainment will be held on "Gallery Night" on April 25th, from 7-10pm. 500 visitors are expected. Open to all artists, and all media, with limited 3d. SPACES Planning for the 2003/04 Season. 2003 Photo Review Photography Competition. Bill Hunt, the influential Directory of Photography of New York's Ricco/Maresca Gallery, will be the juror for the 2003 Photo Review Photography Competition. The Photo Review, a highly acclaimed critical journal of photography, is sponsoring its 19th annual photography competition with a difference. Instead of only installing an exhibit that would be seen by a limited number of people, The Photo Review (Langhorne, Pennsylvania) will reproduce accepted entries in its Summer 2003 issue. The prize-winning photographers will be hosen for an exhibition at the photography gallery of The University of the Arts, Philadelphia. $1,000.00 in cash prizes will be awarded. An entry fee of $25 for up to three prints or slides, and $5 each for up to two additional prints or slides, entitles all entrants to a copy of the catalogue. In addition, all entrants will be able to subscribe to The Photo Review for $30, a 20% discount. Long-term Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition: Creative Arts Guild. In conjunction with its 40th anniversary, the Creative Arts Guild (Dalton, Georgia) is accepting entries for a long-term outdoor sculpture exhibition to run from July 2003 through July 2004. The juror and curator will be internationally renowned sculptor John Henry, who currently serves as Distinguished Professor of Art at Chattanooga State College and is the creator of that school's acclaimed sculpture garden. Typically comprised of intersecting metal beams, Henry's sculptures seem to defy gravity as they soar above the ground, some surpassing 100 feet in height. Henry's work is held by the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, the British Museum and the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, among others. He is a past recipient of several grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and other state arts agencies. Cash awards will be given to all artists selected to participate in the exhibition to help offset the cost of transporting their work to Dalton. One additional cash award will be presented for Best of Exhibit. The Creative Arts Guild will produce a four-color catalogue of the exhibit with free copies for participating artists. This opportunity is open to all professional artists and students pursuing undergraduate and advanced degrees. Artists should be familiar with the design, construction and installation of outdoor sculpture. Work must be able to withstand varying climate conditions and strong winds. The sculptures will be exposed to interaction with the public and must have no sharp edges. Assistance with installation of the work will be provided upon request. Work may be for sale and, if sold during the exhibition, may be removed after a minimum of two months on display on the Guild's grounds. Interested artists should submit a completed entry form, slides or JPG images of the sculpture(s) and a vitae of at least one page detailing academic and professional background. Seeking Artists With Pain. A touring museum art exhibit from artists with chronic pain with their art expressing some facet of the pain experience is being planned to open in the United States in the Fall of 2004. The exhibit is for visual arts and can include drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, video, mixed media, and digital art. Outdoor Sculpture: Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts. Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts has a new outdoor sculpture program that provides sculptors an opportunity to exhibit work in the large, landscaped area called the Founder's Green, in front of the arts center. The Founder's Green currently involves a 42-foot labyrinth, a painter's circle, and three concrete pads for displaying sculpture. Works are exhibited on an annual basis from November through October. The postmark deadline to receive applications is May 31st each year for the following season. All work is insured for liability while on site. At this time, there is no stipend available to assist with the transportation or installation of the work. Caldera: Residency Opportunity. Caldera (Portland, OR) Announces Residency Opportunity for Artists and Writers. The 2003 Deadlines are June 1st and November 1st. Caldera is located on the shore of a cerulean blue lake formed in the cinder cone of an extinct volcano in the Cascade Mountain Range of Central Oregon. In this extraordinary natural setting, Caldera offers residencies of up to five weeks to artists and writers during the fall, winter and spring. Founded in 1996, Caldera is a nonprofit interdisciplinary arts organization committed to fostering creativity, provoking experimentation and stimulating a deeper appreciation for the environment. The 90-acre site at Blue Lake is surrounded by the Deschutes National Forest and is 17 miles west of Sisters, Oregon. Artists and writers accepted for residency are given a private cottage and the time to concentrate on their work. Caldera supports the creative process and there is no expectation that resident artists produce a specific product. However, people who stay more than 14 days are strongly encouraged to give an informal presentation about their work during or after their residency. Public outreach activities could include an interview with the local paper, a workshop in a public school, a brown bag lunch or a public reading or talk at a venue in the Sisters area. They will work with each artist to organize an event that will meet his or her needs and interests. Caldera has a competitive admission process. All applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis by an admissions panel, which includes staff and distinguished professionals in each artistic discipline. The Trawick Prize: Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards. This juried competition will award $14,000 in prize monies to four selected artists. The panel of jurors will select up to fifteen artists who will be invited to display their work. This competition will be juried by Jonathan P. Binstock, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Corcoran; artist Margarida Kendall Hull and curator Deborah McLeod, Director of Exhibitions for the Mclean Project for the Arts. Artists must 18 years of age or older and residents of Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. Original painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, fiber art, digital, mixed media and video (VHS tapes only) are accepted. The maximum dimension should not exceed 96 inches in any direction. WINDART Residency: Atlantic Center for the Arts. Atlantic Center for the Arts' (New Smyrna Beach, FL) WindArt residency, will consist of three, closely coordinated and intermeshed programs with international invited artists in residence: Katsutaka Murooka, kite maker / aerial kite photographer, Marc Ricketts, kite maker / kite theater, Tal Streeter, kite artist. There will be frequent, common sessions (workshops, presentations & readings) scheduled over the course of the three weeks, as well as a community-wide WindArt celebration at the close of the residency. Artist Associates will be encouraged to spend portions of their time, on occasion, participating in on-going activities of the other programs. Candidates should apply to one of the three programs, or indicate an interest in multiple activities. The master artists each personally select a group of associates - talented, emerging artists - through an application process administered by ACA. During the residency, artists participate in informal sessions with their group, collaborate on projects, and work independently on their own projects. NOTEBOOK: Artscape. The NOTEBOOK exhibition is scheduled to take place as part of the Artscape festival in Baltimore, Maryland, which is held July 25-27. NOTEBOOK will consist of single pages from notebooks, sketchbooks, journals, black books, notepads and other forms of paper record keeping. Artists, architects, writers, designers, mathematicians or anyone who keeps a notebook is invited to submit work.
All pages must be originals but do not need to be framed or mounted; however, pages do need to be removed from their notebook. Uniform frames will be supplied by Artscape for all works. Ninth Annual Art Fair: Telfair Museum of Art. Hosted by the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, GA, the oldest art museum in the South, and held at Telfair Square in Savannah's world-renowned national historic district, the Art Fair features more than $5,000 in prizes, including an $1,800 grand prize award. The 2003 event will take place November 7-9. Notification of selection will be sent to artists on Wednesday, August 27. The Telfair will accept 65-70 exhibitors in a variety of art forms, including but not limited to painting, drawing, graphics, sculpture, jewelry, pottery, photography, and furniture. 2004 National Cherry Blossom Festival Art Contest. The National Cherry Blossom Festival is an annual event in Washington, DC that commemorates the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo to the city. The Festival serves as an opportunity to further strengthen the friendship and alliance that has lasted between the United States and Japan for 150 years. The 2004 Festival dates are March 27 – April 12. Artists have a chance to gain exposure to a large audience as hundreds of
thousands of people visit the Washington-area during the Festival from across the country and around the world. James Madison University Art Sculpture. The Galleries Committee of the School of Art and Art History announces an invitational for one outdoor sculpture to be installed on the campus of James Madison University. Review of submissions will begin on August 24, 2003. Announcement of selection no later than September 14, 2003. Installation of sculpture no later than October 31, 2003. Sculpture will remain on site for approximately two years. Honorarium of $1000 is available to cover all costs (materials, shipment of work, transportation, lodging) except site preparation which will be covered by the university. School 33 Art Center Studio Artist Program. Since 1979, the Center's Studio Artist Program has provided exceptional studio spaces at subsidized rates to more than 120 professional artists. Nine prime spaces (approx. 500 sq. ft. each) are available to local artists for leases up to three years. Spaces are 21' x 24'. The $200 monthly rental includes heat and electricity. Air conditioning is not included. All leases are for month-to-month for one year, with a second and third year renewable upon approval. A security deposit of $200 is required. The Studio Selection Panel, comprised of local artists, selects resident artists through a review process. This program has been instrumental in providing a safe, nurturing community and workspace to established and emerging artists in Baltimore. The Center has also hosted a variety of artist residencies and programs that engage the studio artists in the Center's exhibition and educational programming. The Baltimore Exposure Art Show is looking for local artists! This program features the display of original artwork in office lobbies, cafes, restaurants and street level display windows. Happiness and Pretence - A Mail Art Exhibition.
The Bibliotheque Gabrielle-Roy (Quebec, Canada) is calling for artists to participate in a mail-art exhibition, under the theme of Happiness and Pretence. Please note that only work that relates to this theme will be accepted. The mail-art exhibition will be held from April 21 to May 31, 2003, at the Bibiliotheque Gabrielle-Roy in Quebec City, within the context of the second edition of the Manif d'art, a bi-annual event presented by the Manifestation internationale d'art de Quebec. No artist's fees will be paid. Works must be received by mail. Required format: postcard 4 x 6 inches (10 x 15 cm). All works relating to the theme will be exhibited and none will be returned to their creators. Centre for Contemporary Photography: 2004 Gallery Exhibitions. CCP (Fitzroy, VI, AU) is currently calling for proposals for 2004 exhibitions in all its galleries. Proposals to CCP are reviewed each year in May/June for the following years program. The deadline for the next review process is 1 May 2003. CCP promotes photo-based art and its interconnections with wider art practices, life and ideas. Through a range of programs, the Centre encourages audience access to and critical engagement with contemporary photographic culture. CCP exhibits a diverse range of photo-based practices and welcomes proposals from emerging and established artists and curators. Exhibitions in CCPs four gallery spaces change monthly and feature the work of local, interstate, and international artists. Proposals are considered by selection committees that normally include the CCP Director and Program Manager, a representative from CCP's Board of Management, as well as independent artists and critics.
