The Baltimore Museum of Art Presents "In the Artist's Studio: Works from the Collection"

by: Anne Mannix, Director of Public Relations, The Baltimore Museum of Art

Detail of In the Studio by Pablo Picasso, 1933. The Baltimore Museum of Art: The Cone Collection.

"The BMA's outstanding collection of works on paper creates the unique opportunity to examine the artistic motivation of the artists we love,"
said BMA Director Doreen Bolger.
September 15, 2004-For centuries, artists have been fascinated with depictions of themselves or other artists working in their studios. In the Artist's Studio: Works from the Collection, on view at The Baltimore Museum of Art from September 15, 2004 - February 27, 2005, features more than 50 prints, drawings, and photographs by 42 artists from the BMA's collection, including Rembrandt van Rijn, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso.

From Renaissance to contemporary works on paper, this exhibition features a variety of works by artists who use the theme of the artist in the studio to document their evolving social status and professional identity. Many of the works also present perceptions, both real and imagined, of how artists conceived of their work and their studios.

Highlights include four works by Pablo Picasso - who maintained an obsessive interest in the subject of the artist in the studio throughout his career - as well self-portraits by Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall, prints of Alberto Giacometti's chaotic studio, and photographs of Paul Cézanne's preserved studio in France. The exhibition also features illustrations from 16th-century artist manuals by Albrecht Dürer, romanticized 19th-century tributes to artistic heroes of the past, such as Leonardo da Vinci and Fra Fillippo Lippi, and satiric views of a less glamorus side of studio life filled with poverty and rejection by Honoré Daumier and others.

In the Artist's Studio: Works from the Collection is curated by Jennie Fleming, BMA Curatorial Assistant of Prints, Drawings & Photographs.

Gain a new appreciation of the studio as fundamental to the spirit of artistic activity and instrumental to the myth of the artist. In this five-week mini-course led by Jennie Fleming, BMA Curatorial Assistant for Prints, Drawings & Photographs, explore portrayals of the artist in the studio beginning with allegorical and mythical depictions from the Renaissance and Baroque periods by such artists as Albrecht Dürer, Diego Velázquez, and Rembrandt van Rijn. Then investigate the explosion of studio imagery in the 19th century and the phenomenon of portraying past artists at work. The series culminates with a look at the continued relevance of this theme in the 20th century and today in the works by such artists as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Alberto Giacometti. Admission to the exhibition included. Call 410/516-8516 to register.
This program is presented by The Johns Hopkins University's Odyssey Program in collaboration with The Baltimore Museum of Art.
