Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition Opportunity at Evergreen House

by: Jackie O'Regan, Curator, Evergreen House Museum

The fourth biennial outdoor sculpture exhibition will run from May 6 - October 2, 2006; emerging and professional artists are encouraged to submit applications by the June 15, 2005 deadline!
May 04, 2005-Evergreen House of Johns Hopkins University is seeking submissions for its fourth biennial exhibition of outdoor sculpture, Sculpture at Evergreen, which will run from May 6 - October 2, 2006. Artists will be invited to create large-scale outdoor works that respond to the history, collections, and the natural and constructed environments of Evergreen House, a 26-acre historic estate in Baltimore.

Julie Courtney, a noted independent curator from Philadelphia, will curate the 2006 exhibition. She has extensive experience commissioning site-specific projects in public spaces, including Points of Departure: Art on the Line, a project of temporary site-specific installations in nine Pennsylvania train stations, as well as the upcoming exhibitions; Pandemonium, by Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller at Eastern State Penitentiary; The Lost Meeting with J. Morgan Puett in an abandoned Quaker Meetinghouse at Abington Art Center; and meta/Metasequoia with John McQueen and Margo Mensing at The Morris Arboretum.

The selected artists will visit Evergreen with Ms. Courtney to select a site and begin their concept development. Following the visit, each artist will prepare a proposal with drawings and/or a model to be submitted for final approval. All artists will be given a $3,000 honorarium to cover the cost of design and fabrication. There will be up to $1,000 available to cover transportation, installation, and de-installation of each work. The artists will be responsible for removing their work after October 2, 2006.

Emerging and professional artists are encouraged to submit, keeping in mind that there are no additional funds for artist travel and a minimum of two visits to the site (the first to view the site and the second to install the work), are required.

To apply please submit:
  • 20 labeled slides with a red dot in the lower left and filed in a plastic slide sheet
  • a slide script giving the title, date, medium, and dimensions for each work.
  • a current resume
  • a brief statement about your work and approach to outdoor sites
  • a self-addressed, adequately stamped and sized envelope, for return of materials.
Only hardcopy applications will be considered. Do not send original slides, glass mounts or original artwork. Please note that a proposal is not required at this time.

Postmark/Receipt Deadline: June 15, 2005
Notification: July 15, 2005
